Grassi Lakes Trail

An Enchanting Journey Amidst the Rockies

The Grassi Lakes Trail, situated in the heart of an essential Wildlife Corridor, is more than just a trail—it’s a communion with nature. As you embark on this journey, be reminded that you’re treading through a vital ecosystem that demands respect and care.

Parking & Conservation Pass:

Before setting foot on this marvelous trail, ensure you’ve obtained a Kananaskis Conservation Pass, mandatory for vehicles parking at provincial parks and public use lands in the Kananaskis Country and Bow Valley region. The good news? Only one pass is needed per vehicle, regardless of passenger count. Those entering by foot, horse, or bike are exempted from the fee.

Navigating the Trail:

As you commence your hike, about 100 metres from the trailhead you’ll encounter a signpost indicating two routes: the easier **Upper Grassi Lakes Trail** to the right, perfect for families looking for a leisurely walk through dense woods, and the more challenging **Grassi Lakes Interpretive Trail** to the left. This latter trail, draped in forested beauty, rewards hikers with magnificent vistas, including a cascading waterfall and an overlook of Canmore. Winter adventurers, take note: this path is closed during the colder months due to treacherous icy conditions.

Should you choose the more arduous trail first, you’re in for a treat—the best views and mesmerizing waterfalls are yours to behold. Many hikers suggest taking at least one leg of the journey on this route to fully absorb its splendors.

Safety & Considerations:

Safety is paramount. The region is frequented by bears, a testament to the rich biodiversity of the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Equip each member of your hiking party with bear spray and stay vigilant.

While the cliffs near the lakes are a climber’s paradise, hikers should approach with caution. Unless donned in climbing helmets, it’s advisable to maintain a safe distance to prevent accidents caused by falling rocks.

Facilities & Recommendations:

Given the trail’s popularity, its parking lot tends to fill up quickly. An early start is highly recommended to secure a spot. The only washroom facilities are located at the trailhead, so be prepared for potential waits on crowded days.

In essence, Grassi Lakes isn’t just about the destination—it’s a journey through verdant woods, past glistening waterfalls, and around shimmering lakes, all while treading lightly and respecting the bounties of nature.

Beyond Our Expectations!
My partner and I decided to elope and chose the Bear Essentials package. From the moment we arrived both Eugenie and Lonny treated us like royalty. Every concern we had was taken care of, and the end result was more than I could have imagined. Well worth it and would definitely recommend. We are already planning to go back for our anniversary! Thank you so much Eugenie and Lonny!
