The Top 10 Things to Do in Canmore in Winter

While Canmore is an incredible destination all year round, there’s something extra special about the area when it comes to the colder months. In fact, there are a ton of unique things to do in Canmore in winter that are fun for the whole family. From skiing and snowboarding, to snowshoeing, skating or curling up by the fire at some of the unique restaurants and resorts, there’s no shortage of activities to keep you busy. In fact, some of them are even completely free!

To help you get started planning your next visit, below is our top 10 list of the very best things to do in Canmore in winter.

1. Hit the Slopes

One of the most popular activities near Canmore is skiing: and the good news is there are two resorts just a short drive away: Mt. Norquay and Nakiska. Both offer family-friendly ski runs and plenty of powder. Whether you’re a skier or snowboarder, a beginner or an expert, you’ll find a run for every skill level and style – not to mention breathtaking mountain views. If it’s your first time on the slopes there are lessons available from certified instructors or you can always hit up the tube park for another fast and fun way to get down the hill. And of course, nothing beats kicking back and relaxing with some food and a refreshing drink at the lodge.

For beginners, your best bet is probably the Canmore Nordic Center, which features over 3km of trails. If you’re a more advanced snowshoer, however, may want to hire a local guide to hit up the more challenging routes (some of which can be off the beaten path). A very nice and comfy room. Breakfast, prepared by Lonny, the owner and chef, was fantastic. Lonny is also a first-rate tour guide. We visited the Banff, Lake Louise, and icefield areas while staying here, and mostly followed daily activities recommended by Lonny.
