Artist in Residence – Anne deJong

Anne deJong is a landscape painter living in Alberta. Her work is centred around capturing the beauty she sees in nature. DeJong works primarily with a palette knife and oils, creating rich, textured original oil paintings.

Many of deJong’s paintings are inspired by places she has visited with her family. She actively seeks out opportunities to explore natural settings and experience wild and remote landscapes. Her paintings are a commitment to share not only places she has personally experienced, but also landscapes that are dear to her viewers.

Anne deJong has a background in graphic design, but her painting and drawing skills are all self-taught. When she was fourteen, her Grandpa encouraged her to learn how to paint with oils, telling her that she would learn best by just doing; simply buy some paint and start painting. She did just that and has been partial to oils ever since.

An Inspiring Stay

at A Bear and Bison Canadian Country Inn

The majority of my art takes inspiration from Alberta’s Rocky Mountains, using my personal connection to the landscape to ground my paintings. Being in the mountains always brings a feeling of peace, and of awe for the vastness of the wilderness. With each painting, I try to capture that feeling in my work. Spending several days in the Banff and Canmore area through A Bear and Bison Inn’s Artist Residency was the perfect opportunity to gather painting inspiration.

We enjoyed an afternoon in David Thompson Country and headed to Canmore via the Bow Summit, with several stops along the way, including time to paint near the Cline River.

We took advantage of the amazing fall weather and hiked through Larch Valley to Sentinel Pass, catching the last of the larch colours.

The next day was cooler and windy, but we fit in another hike filled with inspiring views. I came home with enough reference photos to keep me painting all winter long!

This time to paint in the outdoors and to reflect and gather inspiration is something I am so grateful for.  I am excited to capture these moments on canvas.

A Bear and Bison Inn on Trip Advisor

As someone with celiac disease…

“There are not enough good things or words to say that sum up our time at Bear and Bison. It’s one thing to do business, we felt welcomed into someone’s home. As someone with celiac disease, the tailored breakfast and care given to making the experience as “typical” as everyone else’s didn’t go unnoticed. The staff are exemplary, the room was immaculate (who doesn’t love an in-suite jacuzzi), the view from our private balcony was unparalleled. We will definitely be back, and will choose A Bear and Bison first every time going forward. Thank you for the incredible stay for our perfect mountain getaway.”
