Upper & Lower Kananaskis Lakes

The Twin Jewels of Alberta

Nestled amidst the rugged embrace of Alberta’s Rockies, the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes present a picture of ethereal beauty. Their shimmering waters and scenic surroundings make them a beloved destination for both locals and tourists. As two of the most accessible lakes within Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, they offer an array of activities suitable for all ages and preferences.

Day Use Areas & Facilities:

– Interlakes Day Use Area: Located between the two lakes, Interlakes offers ample parking, picnic facilities, and a launch site for small boats. It’s an excellent starting point for various activities and provides a panoramic view of both the Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes.

– Canyon Day Use Area: Found on the eastern edge of Lower Kananaskis Lake, this spot is perfect for those seeking a quiet picnic area with fewer crowds and a lovely lakeside view.

Family-Friendly Activities:

  1. Boating: Both lakes, especially the larger Upper Kananaskis Lake, are popular for canoeing, kayaking, and small motor boating. Boat rentals are available seasonally, ensuring even those without their own equipment can take to the waters.
  2. Hiking: Numerous trails surround both lakes, ranging from easy walks to challenging hikes. The ‘Rawson Lake Trail’ starting from Upper Kananaskis is a favorite, leading to a pristine alpine lake. For those seeking a gentler walk, the trail around Lower Kananaskis Lake is scenic and relatively flat.
  3. Fishing: Anglers frequent the lakes, with both offering a good population of trout. As always, ensure you have the necessary fishing permits and follow local regulations.
  4. Picnicking: With multiple day-use areas equipped with tables and fire pits, both lakes provide idyllic spots for a lakeside picnic.
  5. Wildlife Watching: The Kananaskis region is home to diverse wildlife, from moose and deer to a variety of bird species. Always be respectful and maintain a safe distance.
  6. Winter Activities: During colder months, the areas around the lakes become hubs for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The snow-blanketed landscape adds a whole new dimension to its beauty.

Recommendations & Tips:

– Safety Measures: When in the wilderness, safety is paramount. This is bear country, so be bear aware, carry bear spray, and know how to use it. Also, if venturing onto the water, always wear lifejackets.

– Respect the Environment: The Kananaskis region’s beauty is a product of both nature and the efforts of those who visit. Adhere to ‘Leave No Trace’ principles and ensure you maintain the pristine condition of the area.

– Early Arrival: These lakes are popular, especially during summer weekends. Arriving early ensures better parking and a quieter experience.

The Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes are more than just destinations; they’re experiences that resonate with the heart’s rhythm. Their tranquil waters and the whisper of the surrounding pines invite visitors to step away from the daily hustle and immerse themselves in nature’s serene embrace. Whether you’re there for a day or an extended stay, the memories forged by these twin lakes’ shores will linger long after you’ve left.

Wonderful B&B

Our 3 night stay at this B&B was the perfect start to our Vacation. We were fortunate to get the Honeymoon Suite that had an enclosed shower, balcony and great view. We even learned how to use a coffee press.

Breakfasts were wonderful. The owner, Lonny, makes this B&B special and so does his staff. They go out their way to make sure your needs are met.

A lifelong resident, the owner knows where to go and what to see. He willingly helps you plan your day based on your interests and any limitations you have. He was invaluable in this regard. We’ve recommended this B&B to our friends coming here next year.
