Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of the Canadian Rockies, Canmore offers a unique winter adventure that’s gaining popularity every season – ice skating on frozen lakes. Ice skating isn’t just for indoor rinks. With the right weather conditions, you can glide across the frozen surfaces with a stunning mountain view right here in Alberta.

Skate Away at The Canmore Pond, located in downtown Canmore, just two blocks from Main Street, is a popular spot for ice skating. Maintained by the Town of Canmore, this ice surface offers an easily accessible spot in town near all the amenities. It features lights for use until 10:00 PM, an open gazebo with benches, nearby washrooms at the Information Centre on 7th Ave, and a small parking lot.

Gliding on Spray Lake Just a ten-minute drive from Canmore, Spray Lake offers plenty of space, and is perhaps the longest natural rink in Canada, to skate freely with mountain views on all sides. The water often freezes over super smooth and clear, making it perfect for ice skating. However, keep in mind that this lake is more likely to be uncleared shortly after snowfall. So, bring your shovels!

Skating on the Reservoir While skating on the reservoir might seem like a tempting idea, it’s important to note that skating is prohibited on the Rundle Forebay Reservoir. The ice can be unstable and dangerous due to changes in water depth.

Best Time to Skate The best time to skate in Canmore is during the winter months, from November to March. During this time, the weather conditions are ideal for outdoor ice skating. However, as the weather can change rapidly, it’s always a good idea to check the local weather forecast before heading out. If you’re visiting at just the right time, or are local, pay attention to the first big freeze or two of the year! You’ll be rewarded with a stunningly smoot, almost mirror-like frozen lake to break in your skates.

Safety First Safety is paramount when ice skating. It’s important to do your research, check the ice thickness, get some local knowledge about the safety of skating on the lake, and know how to rescue yourself if you fall in.

Ice skating in Canmore offers an unforgettable adventure. So grab your skates, respect the ice, and get ready to glide on the frozen lakes in the heart of the Rockies.

A Bear and Bison Inn on Trip Advisor
Best Wedding ever!

We booked the Bear and Bison Inn 13 years ago today for our wedding venue, and continue to make pilgrimage here once or twice annually ever since. What can we say about the experience here? The service is first rate. The staff are always friendly and accommodating no matter how many times we have been here. The culinary experience is amazing – the owner (Lonny) is a professional chef – and his care and attention to detail certainly shows in the preparation and presentation! They have also proven extremely proactive in accommodating for allergies. We always consider the Bear and Bison Inn our “home away from home” – and will continue to do so in the future! The rooms are clean, the views are spectacular and ambience cultivates an atmosphere of calm and relaxation. It is always our first choice for booking every time we come to Canmore. Lonny takes pride, care and attention into his work and everything he touches. And it shows! We look forward to seeing you again very soon, and thanks again for such a wonderful experience!
