Trip Report

From the very outset, the Grotto Canyon trail promises an experience distinct from the usual mountain hikes around Canmore. Beginning with a gentle stroll through dense pine forests, the smell of fresh pine needles permeated the air, setting a calm undertone for the journey ahead.

However, the real charm of this hike reveals itself when the path narrows into the canyon. Suddenly, we were walking on a stony creek bed, with the canyon walls rising vertically on either side. Every twist and turn of the trail offered a new perspective on these sculpted rocks, worn smooth by centuries of flowing water.

But what truly sets Grotto Canyon apart from other hikes is its history. Halfway through, ancient petroglyphs become visible on the canyon walls. These cryptic symbols, believed to be hundreds of years old, offer a tantalizing glimpse into the world of the indigenous people who once called these lands home.

Winter adds another dimension to this hike. The canyon floor transforms into a corridor of ice, making it a popular spot for ice walking and spotting frozen waterfalls – nature’s own art installations.

Our return journey was accompanied by the gentle hum of the wind echoing through the canyon walls, reminding us of the timelessness of this natural wonder.

Recommendations

Tread Carefully: If you’re embarking on this hike during winter, crampons or ice cleats are essential. The frozen creek bed can be slippery!

Respect the History: The petroglyphs are delicate remnants of the past. Admire them, but do not touch or deface.

Stay Hydrated: Even on shorter hikes, it’s vital to keep drinking water. The dry mountain air can be deceptive!

Capture the Moment: The unique rock formations and historical drawings make for fantastic photo opportunities. Don’t forget your camera!

Grotto Canyon offers a tapestry of Alberta’s rich natural and cultural heritage. It’s not just a path through a canyon; it’s a walk through time, where every rock, crevice, and drawing tells a tale. As we left, the echoes of history and nature resonated within, making it an unforgettable chapter in our Canmore chronicles.

Outstanding Micro Destination Wedding

I relied heavily on reviews while planning for my micro destination wedding so I wanted to leave a detailed review for other brides looking. The Bear & Bison was perfect. Lonny & his team made the planning process stress free. We had a 20 person micro wedding & rented the entire Inn for the weekend (10 bedrooms). The place is exactly the vibe for the Rockies – log cabin style with a view of the mountains. Our guests could not stop talking about the food – they even made accommodations for our 10 year old cousin who loved her pancakes instead of the “adult” breakfasts.
I cannot speak enough about the staff. Brooke, Annette, and Barbara continuously checked on us to ensure we had everything we needed. We didn’t need to bring any decorations as they set up everything perfectly from their inventory. I was so stressed about the rain (it didn’t end up raining) but the girls were fully prepared with options for umbrellas or setting up inside which I cannot thank enough. Everyone loved the bartender Landon – he talked to all the guests and made everyone feel like his family. From our bonfire welcome night, to the wedding day itself, to the goodbye breakfast, the staff made sure every event went perfectly.
This was our dream wedding. I cannot thank the staff enough for making the weekend so special for us. We will definitely be back for an anniversary. A few notes for future brides -ask the staff which rooms don’t have separate showers when planning for elderly or disabled guests -Put bath salts as favors for your guests since all the rooms have beautiful tubs -do the bonfire package plus bar the night before the wedding – it was easier to organize than planning a trip to another bar, plus people can go to bed when they want.
