Embarking on a drive from Calgary to Canmore is not just about reaching a destination; it’s about indulging in the beauty of Alberta’s landscapes along the way. As you traverse the 105-kilometer (65-mile) distance from the urban bustle of Calgary to the tranquil embrace of Canmore, there are numerous stops and detours worth taking.

Essential Stops Along the Way:

  1. Mackay’s Ice Cream in Cochrane: About 35 minutes out of Calgary, take a delightful detour to the town of Cochrane. Here, Mackay’s Ice Cream, a family-owned institution since 1948, offers a plethora of flavors. Treat yourself to a scoop (or two!) of their famous ice cream, making your journey instantly sweeter.
  2. Barrier Lake in Kananaskis: As you draw closer to Canmore, consider stopping by Barrier Lake in Kananaskis Country. A shimmering blue gem surrounded by towering peaks, this reservoir is perfect for a lakeside picnic or a quick stroll. The **Barrier Lake Lookout Trail** offers panoramic views that will take your breath away.
  3. Bow Valley Trail Scenic Route: While the Trans-Canada Highway is the fastest way to reach Canmore, the Bow Valley Trail (Highway 1A) offers a slower, scenic alternative. Along this route, you travel through the picturesque foothills and quickly approach the imposing and impressive Rocky Mountains.

Tips for Your Drive:

  • Leave Early: Especially during peak seasons, it’s best to start your drive early to avoid traffic and make the most of your scenic stops.
  • Fuel Up: While there are gas stations along the way, it’s always a good idea to start with a full tank from Calgary.
  • Stay Updated on Road Conditions: Alberta’s weather can be unpredictable. Check for any road closures or conditions that might affect your drive.

Your journey from Calgary to Canmore promises picturesque vistas, delightful detours, and memories to last a lifetime. Safe travels and enjoy every kilometer!

Best Wedding Venue in the Rockies

I got married on April 28, 2025 at the Bear and Bison Inn, and it was the best decision I could’ve made. We had 64 guests and we stayed two nights at the Inn. My number one compliment to this venue is the staff. Right from the beginning Lonny was a very responsive with emails and helping guide me through wedding planning. There were no hidden fees and everything was very professional and thought out. The day of the rehearsal dinner, check-in was smooth and Brooke and Barbara immediately started setting up all the little details I had planned. The service at the Inn was just incredible and they were so nice and reassuring. The staff were hands down one of the highlights of my wedding. The food was a 10/10 and everyone loved our tapas style dinner the day of the wedding. I was so impressed how efficiently food was distributed to everyone and how guests with dietary restrictions were provided for.

Our bartender was fantastic and even gave us tips on the best spots for pictures. The hot tub was a great feature and all the rooms were beautiful. BREAKFAST was unreal both days, and guests commented on how wonderful the whole space was. I can’t recommend this place enough. Definitely a cozy space that felt like I was getting married in a cabin tucked away in the mountains. Perfect for smaller intimate weddings. This venue is VERY experienced with what they do and can guide you to decisions that work best for everyone!
