Driving from Calgary to Canmore via Bow Valley Parkway

Rolling Foothills through the Canadian Rockies

The drive from Calgary to Canmore offers a unique opportunity to experience the Alberta landscape in all its grandeur. By opting for the Bow Valley Trail (Highway 1A), as opposed to the more direct Trans-Canada Highway, travelers open themselves up to a wealth of scenic spots and charming towns along the way.

Must-Visit Stops on the Bow Valley Trail:

  1. Mackay’s Ice Cream in Cochrane: Begin your journey with a pit stop in the quaint town of Cochrane, just a short detour from the Bow Valley Trail. Here, the iconic Mackay’s Ice Cream awaits with a tantalizing array of flavors. A scoop of their hand-crafted ice cream is a tradition many travelers swear by.
  2. Ghost Lake: Just a brief drive from Cochrane, Ghost Lake offers beautiful water views with the Rockies as a backdrop. It’s an ideal spot for a quick photo session or a serene moment by the water.
  3. Barrier Lake in Kananaskis: Further along the Bow Valley Trail, Barrier Lake emerges as a dazzling sight. This man-made reservoir in Kananaskis Country is surrounded by alpine forests and rugged peaks. The Barrier Lake Lookout Trail provides an opportunity to stretch your legs and immerse yourself in panoramic views.
  4. Lac des Arcs: Just before reaching Canmore, the shimmering waters of Lac des Arcs come into view. This shallow lake, set against the majesty of the Three Sisters mountains, provides a tranquil spot to pause and reflect.

Tips for Navigating the Bow Valley Trail:

-Allow Extra Time: The Bow Valley Trail is a more leisurely route than the Trans-Canada Highway. Factor in additional travel time, especially if you plan to make multiple stops.

– Check Road Conditions: The weather in Alberta can be unpredictable. Stay updated on any potential road closures or adverse conditions.

– Stay Safe: The Bow Valley Trail has sections with reduced speed limits and two-way traffic. Drive cautiously and enjoy the journey.

Embark on a drive that is as much about the journey as the destination. From the comforts of Cochrane to the wild beauty of Kananaskis, the Bow Valley Trail promises an unforgettable road trip experience. Safe travels!

A delightful stay at A Bear and Bison

My spouse and I recently enjoyed a delightful stay at A Bear and Bison Lodge, and we can’t recommend it highly enough! From the moment we arrived, we were impressed with the warm hospitality and overall ambiance. The lodge itself is beautiful, possessing an old-world charm that’s both inviting and relaxing. The amenities were excellent, and we especially enjoyed the stunning views of the Three Sisters mountain peaks.

A true highlight of our stay was the exceptional vegan breakfast (we requested Vegan breakfast). The chef’s skill in preparing a diverse and delicious array of vegan dishes was truly remarkable. Every morning, we looked forward to starting our day with such a satisfying and flavorful meal.

The entire staff was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout our visit, always ready to assist with a smile. We want to give a special shout-out to Brooke at the front desk. Her exceptional hospitality skills and warm demeanor truly made our stay memorable. She went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed and made us feel welcome from check-in to check-out, which were both seamless and efficient.

If you’re looking for a charming and welcoming lodge with exceptional service, stunning views, and delicious breakfast options, look no further than A Bear and Bison Lodge. We can’t wait to return!
