Direct Route on Trans-Canada Highway:

  1. Bow River Viewpoint: A short detour from the highway, this easily accessible lookout offers panoramic views of the Bow River as it meanders through the valley. The towering Castle Mountain in the backdrop provides a picturesque contrast to the river’s gentle flow.
  2. Temple Viewpoint: As you approach Lake Louise, the Temple Viewpoint is a must-stop. Without any strenuous hiking involved, visitors can absorb the stunning vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Scenic Route via Bow Valley Parkway:

For those with a bit more time on their hands and a thirst for scenic beauty, the Bow Valley Parkway (Highway 1A) is a recommended detour. This slower-paced, winding route runs parallel to the Trans-Canada Highway and offers several viewpoints and places of interest.

  1. Johnston Canyon: One of the most popular stops along the Bow Valley Parkway, Johnston Canyon offers an accessible walk to cascading waterfalls and deep gorges. While it’s more than just a roadside lookout, the easy trail and boardwalk are worth the slight detour.
  2. Morant’s Curve: A well-known spot for photographers, Morant’s Curve offers an iconic view of the railroad tracks with the mountains framing the background. If timed right, one might even catch a train passing through this scenic landscape!
  3. Castle Junction: Located at the intersection of Bow Valley Parkway and the Trans-Canada Highway, Castle Junction offers views of Castle Mountain’s rugged peaks and Eisenhower Tower.
  4. Other Pullouts: The Bow Valley Parkway is sprinkled with numerous pullouts and interpretive stops, each providing its unique perspective of the Rockies.

No matter which route you choose, the drive from Canmore to Lake Louise is bound to leave an indelible mark on your memory with its awe-inspiring landscapes and majestic mountain vistas. Safe travels!

A Bear and Bison Inn on Trip Advisor
The Best of the Best!

Wow! A Great Find!

The Bear & Bison exceeded all our expectations! Excellent Staff, service, charm, good value and an overall wonderful experience. Great location within walking distance to town and hiking. We stayed for 3 nights in early September and were lucky enough to stay one more night before returning to Calgary!

Both rooms we stayed in were spacious, had fireplaces, hot tubs, balconies and were well appointed. Lonnie, the owner served up 3 course gourmet breakfasts each morning.

The inn is charming with antiques and lots of room to lounge. The grounds are beautiful too with sitting areas to eat or just relax.
