A Journey of Art and Passion

Shayla Giroux’s Artist Residency at the Inn

This past April, Bear and Bison Inn had the distinct pleasure of hosting Shayla Giroux as part of our Artist in Residence program. For three days, Shayla, a visionary artist from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, shared her exceptional talent and passion for carving with our community. Despite the cool weather, Shayla’s dedication and tireless work outdoors left a lasting impression on all who had the opportunity to witness her artistry.

Shayla Giroux draws her strength from traditional craft techniques, cultivating a profound bond with her chosen materials. Her approach to art is deeply rooted in the belief that the future of art and design demands a delicate balance between honoring tradition and envisioning a progressive future. This philosophy was evident in every piece she created during her residency at the Inn.

Shayla’s work seamlessly integrates functionality with a profound connection to beauty. Inspired by the words of Chase-Riboud, she believes that “sculpture as a created object in space should enrich, not reflect, and should be beautiful. Beauty is its function.” This belief resonates deeply in Shayla’s art, which stands as a declaration of resilience, a celebration of individuality, and a testament to the transformative power of craft.

Adding a special touch to Shayla’s residency was the presence of her father, who joined her for part of the time. Together, they worked on carving projects, showcasing both their individual skills and also the strong bond that enhances their collaborative efforts. The sight of father and daughter working side by side was a heartwarming reminder of the shared love for art and the generational transfer of knowledge and passion.

Shayla’s commitment to sustainability is a cornerstone of her artistic ethos. Residing and working in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, she designs and fabricates her pieces in a responsible manner, salvaging trees cut down by the city and milling them into usable lumber for her projects. This practice o     f repurposing discarded materials underscores her dedication to environmental stewardship and ethical creation.

During her residency at Bear and Bison Inn, Shayla continued to honor this commitment by working exclusively with reclaimed wood. Each sculpture she created was not only a testament to her skill but also a reflection of her deep respect for the environment. Her work reminds us that beauty and sustainability can go hand in hand, and that art has the power to inspire change.

Despite the chilly weather, Shayla’s passion for carving never waned. She worked tirelessly outdoors, braving the elements to bring her artistic visions to life. We were captivated by her dedication and the exquisite pieces she created. Shayla’s residency was a celebration of art, sustainability, and the enduring power of human creativity. We look forward to seeing how her work continues to evolve and impact the world of art and design.

My husband and I had our dream wedding here, which would not have been possible without the amazing Brooke and Lonny!! They are truly the best to work with. We planned with them for a year over email, sent 13 revisions of our wedding document, and countless other ‘Just one more question!’ emails. They were so patient with us and gave us wonderful advice/ tips! They are excellent communicators.
On the day of the wedding, they were nothing short of perfection. Brooke took care of all of the set up and small details, and adapted to some changes on the fly – really took the stress out of the day! I was impressed by her attention to detail. The day went so smoothly! And Lonny – the food was FANTASTIC! Everyone was raving about the food!! Thank you for taking care of us and ensuring we were all so well-fed during our stay! If you are wanting an intimate, beautiful, and stress-free wedding in the Rocky mountains, THIS IS THE PLACE. BOOK BEAR & BISON. Highly recommend!!!
