Artist in Residence – Aleece Coward

A bit about Aleece, in her own words

I have always been an artist but like many, I was steered by society to find a more lucrative career path. It has taken me 41 years and a global pandemic to shake me by the shoulders, causing me to reflect and reassess my purpose and my passion. I remembered as a young child I would spend my weekends, drawing and coloring, finding my happy place in any form of art.

Although I don’t have a formal education in art, I have taken countless classes throughout my life all with the desire to fulfill my creative outlet. From photography, pottery, writing, drawing, I’ve landed on my love of painting. Having dealt with anxiety, OCD and depression most of my life, I have only now come to realize that art (specifically painting) is a, incredible form of therapy for me. Through this, I am able to zen out and give complete focus to the present. Is it possible to make money doing something that brings me so much peace? I am on the journey to find out!

Aleece Coward – An Artist Emerges

After much heartfelt reflection brought on by current global events, I am just starting my transition from a career of 20 years in the fashion industry to that of an emerging artist! These 2 worlds have amalgamated in my current series “Fauna in Fashion”. While I have always pursued creative outlets, from photography to pottery, I have come back to my childhood love of painting. I am proud to say that I already have some watercolour prints available for purchase! selling at Poor David’s Handmade in Inglewood Calgary, and I was chosen to show my work at the annual Under $100 Art Show!

Aleece Coward – Artist Residency at A Bear and Bison Inn

I was thrilled to be selected as an artist in residence at The Bear and Bison in November. This gave me the opportunity to create some new pieces for my upcoming show. More importantly, I was able to really get in the zone. Just painting for hours, uninterrupted in the coziest spot (the loft) at A Bear and Bison Canadian Country Inn, surrounded by mountains.

Add to this: waking up to 3 course chef prepared breakfasts, starting my day with a jacuzzi bath, tranquil nature walks and delicious local cuisine.

I had even created a special playlist for painting at my Artist Residency. Time to really get in the zone. When I felt a bit blocked on what to paint, I went for a hike which was exactly what I needed to get my creative energy flowing again. Nature is so wonderful at providing inspiration, if we are quiet enough to listen and open enough to see it. I am forever grateful for this soul nourishing experience.

I got married on April 28, 2025 at the Bear and Bison Inn, and it was the best decision I could’ve made. We had 64 guests and we stayed two nights at the Inn. My number one compliment to this venue is the staff. Right from the beginning Lonny was a very responsive with emails and helping guide me through wedding planning. There were no hidden fees and everything was very professional and thought out. The day of the rehearsal dinner, check-in was smooth and Brooke and Barbara immediately started setting up all the little details I had planned. The service at the Inn was just incredible and they were so nice and reassuring. The staff were hands down one of the highlights of my wedding. The food was a 10/10 and everyone loved our tapas style dinner the day of the wedding. I was so impressed how efficiently food was distributed to everyone and how guests with dietary restrictions were provided for.

Our bartender was fantastic and even gave us tips on the best spots for pictures. The hot tub was a great feature and all the rooms were beautiful. BREAKFAST was unreal both days, and guests commented on how wonderful the whole space was. I can’t recommend this place enough. Definitely a cozy space that felt like I was getting married in a cabin tucked away in the mountains. Perfect for smaller intimate weddings. This venue is VERY experienced with what they do and can guide you to decisions that work best for everyone!
